Leisure Assistant .
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and customer focussed Leisure Assistant / Lifeguard to play a key role in the first class sports centre of one of the leading schools in the UK.
As a Leisure Assistant, you will play an integral part in the running of the Centre. Representing the Sports Centre in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner, you will undertake a variety of duties, ranging from general lifeguarding duties, sporting facility set ups, as well as assisting with the general housekeeping of the Centre.
The Sports Centre is a dual use facility for both Uppingham School and the local community. As well as providing a first class facility for the School’s pupils, the Centre has been designed to allow increased access by local residents, sports clubs and schools. It includes a sports hall, 25m swimming pool, gym, squash courts and dance studios. The Centre also houses the School’s PE Department and includes a hospitality suite for match-day entertaining. In November 2016, the Centre’s fitness studio was refurbished and supplied with new state-of-the-art fitness equipment creating an enhanced 60 station fitness studio.
If you have experience of working within the leisure industry and are confident in dealing with a variety of people with a calm, customer focussed approach we would be delighted to hear from you. An NPLQ is desirable however training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Salary: £7.70 per hour (£8.21 per hour for over 25s).

Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is one of Britain’s leading co-educational independent boarding schools. It is located in the small market town of Uppingham, amid the rolling fields of Rutland.
800 pupils, almost all boarders, are accommodated in fifteen boarding houses almost a mile apart. The academic year takes up about thirty-two weeks each year. Outside term time, and principally during the two summer months, the School turns itself into a commercial enterprise, putting its facilities to use for residential lettings, courses and events.
The Sports Centre:
As well as providing new and improved facilities for the School’s pupils, the new facility has been designed to allow increased access by local residents, sports clubs and schools. After accommodating the educational and social demands of pupils, the School is eager to develop wider access to the Centre and encourages participation by the local community in a range of sports and leisure activities organised and managed by the Centre staff. The Centre is managed by the School’s trading company on a commercial basis. Critical to the success of the Centre is a commercially targeted and client focused staff team. Staff readily accept the responsibility of representing the School and enterprise company in the local community.
Uppingham School Sports Centre leisure assistants will play an integral part in the running of the Centre. They will represent the Sports Centre in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner, trained in customer service, pool supervision and housekeeping. Working as part of a team all leisure assistants will be efficient and complete daily tasks ready for hand over at the end of the shift.
Working in a shift pattern to cover the opening hours of 06.30 –22.30 Monday to Friday, 07:30 – 18:30 Saturday and 07:30 – 22:30 on Sunday.
About the role:
To provide all visitors to Uppingham School Sports Centre with a friendly and positive experience, through delivering effective customer service and maintaining safe facilities through supervision and high standards of housekeeping.
Completing your shift in accordance with the rota and completing daily task sheets.
Maintaining constant supervision of pool areas while lifeguarding.
Ensuring all sporting facilities and equipment are suitable for use.
Supervise pupils and members / visitors and ensure their safety.
Undertake regular staff training including maintaining your NPLQ.
Undertake general lifeguarding duties and ensure the pool is never left unattended whilst in use.
Be aware of general pool conditions and report any changes from the norm to a duty manager.
Monitor number of bathers in the pool and when numbers exceed specified limits advise additional lifeguards, duty manager and reception.
Check safety equipment and report any defect to a duty manager.
Complete all associated paperwork in relation to your daily tasks.
Experience of working within the leisure industry.
Experience of working as part of a team.
Experience of working within the leisure industry is desirable.
Experience of dealing with emergency situations.
Experience of working on reception.
Car driver / own transport is desirable.
NPLQ (or the ability to achieve).
Fitness instructor (level 2).
ASA swim teacher (level 1/2).
