About the role: 

As a Dementia Support Worker, you will provide support, information and guidance to people with dementia, their carers and wider family or friends throughout Gateshead. The support is provided in a range of settings, including the client’s home, community and in group. The support will include enabling service users to have a greater understanding of dementia, plan for the future, as well as signposting and providing referrals to other services. You will liaise with relevant statutory and voluntary organisations in the area to ensure service users receive up to date information. 

Your role will require you to deliver a carer’s group, a monthly Singing for the Brain session and also provide cover for other groups as and when necessary. You will work alongside our dedicated volunteers ensuring the sessions are delivered to enable participants to engage fully and maximise their enjoyment whilst having a beneficial impact. You will work alongside service users and volunteers to plan the sessions. 

As the role covers a large geographical area, the ability to travel independently would be preferable. 

About you: 

We are looking for a dementia support worker to cover a period of maternity leave. You will need to possess an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) and have a good understanding of dementia and the needs of those living with dementia and their carers. An ability to assess the service user needs along with an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and data protection is essential. 

To be successful in this role you will have excellent communication skills and an understanding of a person-centred approach. You should have relevant experience of record keeping and report writing. 

This role involves regular use of IT packages; therefore, a good standard of IT would be desirable. 

You will be responsible for your own caseload therefore the ability to manage your own time effectively is essential. Your caseload will be varied so we are looking for someone with the right mix of enthusiasm, professionalism and flexibility who is able and willing to work in a variety of settings. 

Experience of working with volunteers is desirable. The post will involve working in people's homes and in a range of community settings; therefore, a DBS disclosure will be required.
